If there’s a downside to the popularity of the Richmond Night Market, it’s that the lineups are long and the vendors sometimes run out of food.

If you happen to call Surrey home, an answer to this dilemma is on the way. On July 4, a weekend night market at the Cloverdale Exhibition grounds will bring the same blend of multicultural food and retail vendors to a new borough.

The project was started by five Surrey organizers who felt the city was lacking a vibrant, open-air shopping attraction. “We had been going to the Richmond market and thought we needed to have an event in Surrey as well where families could feel safe and secure and have a night out,” organizer Satbir Cheema told the Province newspaper last week.

One of the market’s more peculiar attractions, according to the market website, is a “space station” experience. A web ad describes a Star Trek-inspired “Battle of the Borg” simulation “where you board the shuttle craft motion simulator and battle the cybernetically enhanced human drone collective.”

Beyond alien encounters, there will also be the familiar collection of global cuisines, including Filipino, Chinese, Indian, Mexican and Caribbean dishes. Accessories and midway games are also on the docket, from phone cases to karaoke to Tarot card readings. The website estimates between 5,000 and 8,000 visitors will come through each night. (The Richmond night market, which has been around over a decade, boasts 10,000 visitors per night).
